As a greeting for March 8th, we present a long-awaited feminist portrait that has taken the world by storm!
ALL WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT takes us into the heart of Mumbai – a city full of contrasts. There we follow two female nurses in their search for love and presence. The film explores the tension between duty and freedom, and between family ties and personal choices, in a story that balances beautiful visual art with deep human vulnerability. Director Payal Kapadia is herself from this bustling Indian metropolis.
Nurse Prabha is a hard-working woman who wants to be faithful to her husband who lives in Europe, and who receives an unexpected package from him. Her younger roommate, Anu, is trying to find a place where she can be intimate with her lover. The two women are at completely different places in the world of love, but on a trip to a beach town they find a place where their wish can come true.
The film captivates us with a poetic interpretation of women in modern-day Mumbai, beautifully illustrated by a beautiful color palette. This is a universal, tender and emotional film about "the light that shines within us".
ALL WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT won the main prize SØLVSPEILET at Film Fra Sør, the Grand Prix award at Cannes and a number of other awards.
The jury for Sølvspeilet says, among other things:
"As a cinematic love letter to Mumbai, the film depicts, through the three main characters, a broken system, without explicitly pointing out what is not working, but by showing how beautiful life can be despite the challenges. The relationships between the characters are very well written, and their performances are simply outstanding and memorable.
The jury is captivated by director Payal Kapadia's poetic storytelling, and is particularly impressed by her choice of form, not least the brilliant use of music. The use of light, both as a metaphor and as an aesthetic and formal tool, elevates the film to something completely unique, and puts compassion and women's solidarity at the center. This moving film is like a ray of hope. It makes the world a much better place.”
