The International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste is observed every year on September 29th to raise awareness about food waste and its impact on food security and sustainability.
Why this day matters:
🍅 Food Security
A large amount of food produced is discarded, even though many people around the world go hungry. This highlights the need for a more equitable distribution of resources.
💚 Sustainability
Food waste results in wasted labor, water, energy, and land—resources that are already scarce. It also contributes to greenhouse gas emissions.
🌍 Global Cooperation
The day serves as a global call to action for individuals, organizations, governments, and businesses to help reduce food waste.
How students can contribute:
🏠 Plan purchases, cook appropriate portions, and store food properly to prevent spoilage.
🏙️ Support initiatives like Too Good To Go to reduce surplus food in businesses, and participate in local and national programs aimed at combating food waste.
