RESTORATION OF AN OLD TRADITIONAL HAY MEADOW

RESTORATION OF AN OLD TRADITIONAL HAY MEADOW
Would you like to learn more about flower meadows, how to preserve our natural diversity, and do some physical work outdoors?
On Saturday, August 29, we’ll be restoring an old flower meadow at Kasin in Svartdal, a valley with a designated cultural landscape and old-growth forest.
PLEASE CLICK “GOING” IF YOU´D LIKE TO JOIN, so we know how many people are coming.
This will be our first major project where progress and results will be documented so we can share our experiences with others. Please let us know if you enjoy taking photos and would like to help us with this during the event.
On Saturday, we’ll start by removing unwanted vegetation that’s overgrowing the meadow, such as small trees, raspberry thickets, and brambles. We´ll also going to mow part of the meadow with a scythe. It’ll be a fun and social day, bring good mood, and we’ll provide all the equipment and lunch for you! Please let us know if you have any allergies or dietary preferences we should take into account.
Among other things, we’ve found the elder-flowered orchid (Dactylorhiza sambucina), an orchid classified as Vulnerable on the Norwegian Red List. Over time, these will disappear as the landscape becomes overgrown, so we want to restore the area back to a traditional hay meadow to preserve the biodiversity that once existed there.
We’ll meet outside the campus entrance on Saturday, August 29, at 9:45 a.m., then we’ll carpool before heading out at 10 a.m.! Please come by car if you have one, you’ll receive a mileage allowance, so we know we have enough cars for everyone:) We plan to be back by 4 p.m. the same day.
