A fire alarm system is installed in the building. The fire alarm system sends direct notification to the fire service. If a fire starts, the fire alarm will sound throughout the building. You can find the fire safety instructions and evacuation plan nearby the fire system and on our home page. Every unit, laundry room and technical room are equipped with a fire extinguisher.

Make sure you know where the emergency exits are, how the fire alarm system works, how to use a fire extinguisher and think about what to do in case of an emergency.

In the event of a real fire, you need to follow the fire safety instructions and the evacuation plan. If the alarm sounds, please follow the general rule: always evacuate the building and go to the designated assembly area in the parking lot by the waste bins. In the event of a fire or lots of smoke in the corridors/stairwells, it may be best to stay in your room and get the fire service's attention for assistance.

The fire service must always be contacted by calling 110 when the alarm goes, either to notify that there is a fire or to inform about a false alarm.

    Fire alarm system

The building is fully covered with fire detectors in all areas. There is a detector in every housing unit. The fire alarm system has a pre-warning function to counteract unnecessary/false alarms.

In those cases where two detectors in the housing units, or one detector located in the common area (HCWS, laundry, corridor or technical room) are triggered, the alarm will be triggered directly (without warning) and the alarm will sound throughout the entire building, and the fire service will be alerted and send a response team.

The control panel, which is located inside the main door on the ground floor, shows which detector has triggered the alarm.

    Resetting unnecessary alarm:

If a lot of smoke accidentally occurs, for example during cooking, the fire detector will go into "warning" and start beeping. You have two minutes to air out the smoke and go to the fire control panel to stop the alarm. In addition, you must call the fire service on 110 and report that there has been a false alarm and that the "fire" is under control. If you don't stop the alarm, it will switch to full alarm, which means that the alarm will be triggered throughout the building and the fire service will be notified and respond.

If you are unable to stop a false alarm before it sounds through the entire building or the alarm is triggered in the common area without a fire, contact the fire service and report that it is only a false alarm.

NB! Do not reset an alarm before the cause of the alarm has been identified. Find out which detector has triggered the alarm (this is shown in the display on the control panel), check if there is a fire or smoke. If there is no fire / smoke, the alarm can be stopped and the landlord / janitor needs to be informed.

If you do not have the time to reset the alarm panel, the alarm must be reset by the fire control panel staff. The control panel provides information on how to do this. Contact SSN's janitor or landlord if you are unsure. In cases where the fire service has responded, they will reset the control panel after they have carried out the necessary examinations.

If the fire service responds to a false alarm, the person who caused the emergency may be invoiced for the fire service's (relatively costly) effort. If you stop the alert before the alarm sounds throughout the entire building and notify the fire service on 110, you will not be charged.

The control panels with operating instructions are located on the ground floor just inside the door.

NB!! In case of a fire, notify the fire service by calling 110.

If the fire alarm is triggered in one building, the alarm will go off in that building and not in any other building.

If a false alarm is set off, for example due to cooking, you have to do the following:

    - Cancel the alarm on the control panel. Press the reset button
    - Open windows to air so the alarm does not go off again

Fire alarm goes off, but there is no sign of fire - what do I do?
Locate the buzzer that triggered the alarm (this is displayed on the control panel), check for heat, flames or smoke. If there is no fire, just a false alarm, contact the resident assistant or the caretaker. Then cancel the alarm.

NB! Do not cancel the alarm until the cause of the alarm has been investigated.

If, by accident, cooking results in large amounts of smoke, the fire detector will be triggered, and a “pre warning” sound (beep) will start. You then have 4 minutes to get rid of the smoke (try airing it out), and find the fire control panel, which is located in the entrance area. You will see your room number in the display on the Alarm Panel. Turn off the alarm so it does not sound in the entire building and notify the Fire Service. Call the Fire Service (110) and notify them that it is an unnecessary alarm and not an actual fire. There is a fire alarm system installed, with fire hoses and a sprinkler system in the building. The system is directly linked to the Fire Service, and in case of fire, an alarm will go off in the building where the fire starts. If the alarm goes off in U1 or U2, the alarm will sound in both buildings. On the panel of the fire alarm system, located on the inside of the main doors in both buildings, you can see which detector has triggered the alarm. Make sure to learn how the fire alarm system works and prepare for what you must do if a situation occurs.

The building has fire detectors in all areas. There is a fire/smoke detector in every housing unit.

Panels for deactivating alarms are installed on the floors with student accommodation to make it possible to turn the alarm off when there is a false alarm. In cases where two detectors on the housing floors or one detector in the HC WC, broom closet, electrical room or storage room, triggers the alarm, the alarm will sound throughout the entire building and the Fire Service will be automatically notified and respond. If a detector is triggered in the commercial areas or basement, the alarm will sound throughout the building and the fire service will be alerted.

The sprinkler system is only activated where there is an actual fire (triggered at a temperature of 68°C).

If the alarm is triggered, the lifts will automatically be deactivated and stop on the ground floor.

In the event of a fire alarm, all doors will be automatically unlocked. This includes both the main doors, escape doors and the doors into every student housing unit. The reason for this is that you need to be able to escape back to your room if corridors are filled with smoke or fire. If there is fire or smoke in the corridors/staircase, the best solution can be to stay in your room and get the Fire Service's attention for assistance. If there is no real fire and the control panel is reset, all doors will be locked automatically.

Always contact the fire service on 110 when the alarm sounds, either to report a fire or a false alarm.

Press the red button (2 sec) to stop the alarm, then press the green button (2 sec) to reset the system. Then you must call the Fire Service (110) to report the false alarm. If you do not follow this procedure, and shut down the alarm (pressing red and green buttons), a full alarm will sound throughout the entire building and the Fire Service responds.

If more than one detector is triggered due to major smoke, the deactivating panel will not work and a full alarm will be set off regardless.

If you do not manage to deactivate the alarm in time (when false), or the alarm is triggered by a lot of smoke, you must still contact the Fire Service to notify them that it is a false alarm.

It is of course important to air out any smoke thoroughly, to avoid the alarm going off again.

If you do not deactivate the alarm in time, or a full alarm is triggered because of a lot of smoke, the alarm must be reset from the alarm system control panel.

See information next to the control panel for how to do this. Contact SSN’s operations personnel if you are unsure of what to do. In the cases where the Fire Service responds, they will reset the system after they have made their necessary investigations.

If the Fire Service responds to a false alarm, the person who caused it may be charged for the fire service’s efforts (very expensive). If you cancel the warning beep before the alarm goes off in the entire building, and call the Fire Service (110) about the false alarm, you will not be charged.

NB! Do not cancel the alarm unless you are 100 % certain of what caused the alarm to be triggered, and that it is indeed a false alarm.

If there is an actual fire, follow the fire instructions and evacuation plan.

When the alarm is triggered, you should always evacuate the building and go to the designated assembly area in front of the building by the flagpole (same as for USN).

If a fire or fire alarm occurs in Sigma, the alarm will go off in Sigma and Omega and vice versa (Omega and Sigma are in the same fire cell). A message will be sent to SSN's operations personnel.

Omega, Sigma and Epsilon have a sprinkler system.

    Fire alarm control panel

There is a fire alarm control panel in each building, located on the ground floor by the front door which is towards the centre of the yard at Alfa, Beta, Gamma and Delta and by the main entrance at Sigma, Omega and Epsilon. Residents on the 1st floor can use the control panel on the ground floor with their key cards. Make sure you know how the control panel works.

    Fire detector

There is a fire detector with buzzer in each unit, in corridors and common rooms. If, for example, you are making pizza and make a lot of smoke, the fire detector may go into pre-alarm mode. This will be displayed in the control panel, but you will not get any notification about this inside your room/apartment. If you suspect that you have triggered the buzzer, you can go to the control panel and disable this to prevent the alarm going off in the entire building. To disable the alarm, open the panel with the key and press the button “Avstill klokker” or “Avstille summer”. If you do this and get a window opened and "save" the pizza so that the detector does not activate again, you will avoid the alarm going off in the entire building. (You don't have much time from pre-alarm mode until the alarm goes, depending on how much smoke there is.) Reset the system to normal mode. See information by the control panel to reset. Please contact the janitor or the landlord if you experience any difficulties.

If the alarm goes off and you know that you are the one that has triggered the alarm (room number is shown in the control panel), cancel the alarm and reset the system back to normal mode.

The fire alarm is triggered, but no sign of a fire - what do I do?

Do not turn off the fire alarm before you know why the fire alarm was triggered. Disable the alarm and reset the system to normal mode if there is no fire, just a false alarm.

If there is a real fire, follow the fire safety instructions and evacuation plan. NB! In case of fire always call 110.

In case of a fire, all doors will be put in open position. This applies to main doors, escape exits and doors to accommodation units. Doors in the middle of the corridors (Sigma, Omega and Epsilon) are fire safety doors and they will close automatically when the alarm is triggered. The reason why the doors are put in open position is so you can escape back to your rooms if the corridor is on fire or full of smoke. The fire service ladders will reach every window and if necessary you can evacuate from there. The sprinkler system will start if there is a fire. The lifts will automatically be out of function.

If there is no fire and the system is reset, all doors (main doors, escape exits and single unit/apartment doors) will be automatically locked. The lift will function as normal automatically. To set the fire safety doors in open position, you must open the main door and hold it against the wall so that the side door opens - hold the side door against the wall.

If you can do this and get the windows opened, "save" the pizza from the oven so that the detector is not activated again, you can stop the fire alarm from going off in the entire building and to the fire service. If a detector goes into alarm, it will trigger the alarm throughout the whole building and the fire service will be notified. It is important to let the smoke out so that the alarm is not triggered again.

If you are not able to deactivate the alarm, it will sound throughout the building and the fire service will be alerted. As soon as you have checked the control panel and found it that it is a false alarm, you cancel the alarm and call the fire service on 110 to report that there is no fire, just a false alarm. NB! Do NOT cancel the alarm before you know for sure why it was triggered.

If there is an actual fire, follow the fire safety instructions and evacuation plan (see info posted by the control panel and on our website).

If the fire service is dispatched to a false alarm that you caused, you will be charged  for their effort.

If the fire alarm goes off all doors automatically open. This applies to all outer doors, evacuation doors in the southern parts of the hallways and the doors into the accommodation units. The doors in the middle of the hallway are fire safety doors, which are automatically closed when the alarm goes off. The reason why the doors to your unit are opened/unlocked is to ensure that you are able to run back into your room in case there is fire in the hallways. The windows in your units are per definition part of the escape route. The fire service's ladder truck is able to reach all windows in the building and may evacuate residents through the windows. The fire will activate sprinklers.

If there is no actual fire and the fire alarm system is reset, all doors (outer doors, evacuation doors and apartment doors) will automatically lock themselves again. The fire safety doors in the hallways must be put back in open position by manually opening the main door, holding it against the wall, before the smaller part of the door is opened and held against the wall.

If by accident lot of smoke appears when cooking, for example, pizza, the buzzer will go to PRE-ALARM. This will be visible in the display on the control panel, but you will not be notified in your room. If you suspect that you have triggered the notice/pre-warning, you can check the control panel (your room number will be shown in the display) and deactivate the notice/pre-warning so the alarm will not go off in the entire building. You deactivate the alarm by turning the key and pressing the button “Avstill (Silence)” bottom centre.  If you manage to do this, open the windows and “save” your pizza, so the buzzer won’t activate again, the fire alarm system will not go off. (You don't have a long time to do all this, depending on how much smoke there is.) After you are done, you have to reset the system back to normal working mode, turn the key and press the button “Tilbakestill (Reset)”. Look at the instructions next to the panel. If you have problems resetting it, contact the janitor.

If the alarm is triggered and you are completely sure that it is you who triggered the alarm (the room number is shown in the display on the panel), you can silence/deactivate the alarm.

Tip: When cooking we recommend that the cooker fan is on maximum capacity for the first minutes before cooking. This can be a help so the alarm won’t be triggered.

If the alarm goes off in the entire building, the fire service will respond. In such cases the fire service should always be informed if it’s an emergency or a false alarm.  They will reset the fire alarm system after they have searched the area.

In case of a real fire you need to follow the fire safety instructions and the evacuation plan. When an alarm is triggered you need to evacuate the building and assemble outside the building on the other side of the street.

If the fire service is called out on a false alarm, the person who triggered the alarm will be charged for their efforts. If you manage to deactivate the alarm in time and call 110 before the alarm in the entire building goes off, you will not be charged.

A fire alarm system and a sprinkler system are installed in the building. In the event of a fire, the fire alarm system for the entire building will go off, and the fire service is notified automatically. You can see on the control panel which fire detector caused the alarm.

NB! Remember that even if the fire service is notified automatically, you also need to call 110 in the event of a fire.

The sprinkler system is only activated where there is a fire (temperatures over 68oC).

The fire alarm system is directly connected to the fire service. Please learn how the fire alarm system works. The control panel is located on the left of the main entrance. There is a fire detector with a buzzer in each room, also in each corridor, common rooms, laundry room, technical rooms and basement.

If accidentally a lot of smoke is produced during cooking, the fire detector will go to notice/pre warning. You will then have 4-5 minutes to deactivate the pre warning by pushing the red button on the control panel in the corridor. You also need to push the green button to notify the fire service that this was a false alarm. You then need to call the fire service on 110 to report a false alarm. If you can’t manage to deactivate the alarm in time (red then green button), the fire alarm will go off in the entire building and the fire service will respond. It’s important to make sure your room is aired enough to prevent a new alarm.

If the alarm goes off in the entire building, the fire service will respond. In such cases, the fire service should always be informed if it’s an emergency or a false alarm. They will reset the control panel after they have searched the area.

In case of a real fire, you need to follow the fire safety instructions and evacuation plan (posted in all rooms and corridors). When an alarm is triggered, you need to evacuate the building and assemble outside the building on the other side of the street.

The buildings have fire alarm systems and sprinkler systems, and also hand fire extinguishers in all housing units and common areas. The system is linked directly to the Fire Department and in case of fire, an alarm will go off in both buildings and a message will be sent to the Fire Department. On the panel at the central, located on the inside of the main door in both buildings, you can see which detector has triggered the alarm. Make sure to learn how the fire protection system works and be prepared for what you must do if a situation occurs.

The buildings have fire detectors in all areas. There is a fire/smoke detector in every housing unit.

Panels for deactivating alarms are installed on every floor to make it possible to turn it off when there is a false alarm. In cases where two detectors or one detector in the HC WC, broom closet, electrical room or storage room, sets the alarm, both buildings will be alarmed and the Fire Department will be automatically notified. In that case the panel for deactivating alarms can’t be used.

The sprinkler system is only activated where there is an actual fire (triggered at a temperature of 68°C).

If the alarm is triggered, the elevators will automatically be deactivated and stop on ground floor.
In case of a fire alarm all doors will be automatically unlocked. This includes both the main doors, escape doors and the doors into every student housing unit. The reason for this is that you need to be able to escape back to your room if corridors are filled with smoke or fire. If there is fire or smoke in the corridors/staircase, the best solution can be to stay in your room and call upon the Fire Department’s attention for escape assistance. If there is no real fire and the central is reset, all doors will be locked automatically.

The Fire Department must always be contacted on phone number 110, whether it is a real fire or a false alarm.

    Panel for deactivating alarms:

Each floor has a panel for deactivating alarms, whether in the common kitchen, lobby or staircase. Make sure to know where it is located! If you’re in your room and by accident creates large amounts of smoke while cooking or create steam after showering etc. the fire detector will be triggered, and a “pre warning” sound will start. You then have 2 minutes to get rid of the smoke (try airing it out), find the deactivating panel, press the red button (2 sec) to stop the alarm, and then press the green button (2 sec) to reset the central. Then you must call the Fire Department (110) to report the false alarm. If you do not follow this procedure and shut down the alarm (pressing red and green button) the alarm will go into a full alarm. The whole building will be alarmed and the Fire Department responds.

If one detector in the common areas (included common kitchen), or more than one detector in the housing units are triggered, the deactivating panel will not work and a full alarm will be set off regardless.

If you do not manage to deactivate the alarm in time (when false) or the alarm goes off on several detectors, you must still contact the Fire Department to notify them that it is a false alarm.

It is of course important to air out any smoke thoroughly to evade the alarm from going off again.

If you do not deactivate the alarm in time, or a full alarm is triggered because of smoke, the alarm must be reset from the control panel to the fire central. See information next to the central to see how it is done.

Contact SSN’s operation personnel if you are unsure of what you need to do. In cases where the Fire Department appears, they will reset the central after they have made their necessary investigations.

If the Fire Department responds to a false alarm, the one who caused it may be billed for the department’s efforts. If you silence the warning beep before the alarm goes off in the entire building, and call the Fire Department (110) about the false alarm, you will not be billed.

Note! Do not silence the alarm unless you are 100% certain of what triggered the alarm, and that it is indeed a false alarm.

If there is an actual fire, please follow the fire instructions and evacuation plan.

When the alarm is triggered, you should always escape the building and go to the meeting place.

    The fire alarm system

The control panels with operating instructions are located on the ground floor just inside the door. Residents on the first floor can use their key to open and operate the control panel on the ground floor. Familiarise yourself with how the system works.

There is a fire detector with a buzzer (pre warning) in each bedroom, apartment and in corridors and laundry rooms. If, for example, you're making a pizza and there is a lot of smoke, the fire detector will go to notice/pre warning. If this happens, you have to make your way quickly to the control panel (you will see your room number on the display) and deactivate the pre-warning to prevent the alarm from sounding throughout the building. To deactivate the alarm, open the panel with the key and press the Silence (avstill klokker) or Mute (avstille summer). Do this and get the windows opened, "save" the pizza from the oven so that the detector is not activated again, and the fire alarm will not go off in the entire building. See the operating instructions beside the control panel to reset. Contact the janitor or resident assistant if you have problems.

NB! You have 2 minutes to reach the control panel and deactivate the pre warning, so that it does not trigger a false alarm in the entire building and to the fire service.

If the alarm goes, it's a false alarm and you know that it's you who triggered the alarm (your room number is displayed on the control panel), cancel the alarm and reset the system to normal mode.

Fire alarm goes off, but there is no sign of fire - what do I do?
Locate the buzzer that triggered the alarm (this is displayed on the control panel), check for heat, flames or smoke. If there is no fire, just a false alarm, contact the fire service on 110. Then cancel the alarm.

NB! Do not cancel the alarm until the cause of the alarm has been investigated.

If the fire service is called out on a false alarm, then the person responsible will be charged by the fire service for their efforts. If you call 110 immediately and inform them that it is only a false alarm, then you will not be charged.

If there is an actual fire, follow the fire safety instructions and evacuation plan.
